Robotic-Assisted Surgery
At Ladies First Obstetrics & Gynecology in southeast Alabama, our OB-GYN surgeons are specially trained in the art and science of minimally invasive robotic-assisted surgery. It is one of the latest innovations available to treat many common gynecological conditions.
When your Ladies First surgeon controls the robotic arm during a gynecological surgery, she is able to achieve a level of dexterity and precision not possible with human hands alone. The benefits for our patients are simply astounding. No wonder more and more patients are choosing robotic-assisted surgery.

What Procedures Can Be Done
At Ladies First, we utilize robotic assistance for a variety of complex procedures that can be done laparoscopically. A laparoscopy is a minimally invasive approach where the pelvic region is accessed via small incisions at or near the belly button.
Laparoscopic procedures that can involve robotic assistance include:
- Hysterectomy – removal of the uterus and possibly also the cervix, fallopian tubes, ovaries, and more to treat a variety of gynecological conditions, including endometriosis
- Myomectomy – to remove uterine fibroids without damaging the uterus and while preserving your fertility
- Removal of scar tissue and endometrial tissue found outside the uterus in women with endometriosis
Your Ladies First provider may recommend robotic-assisted surgery. You can also ask if you are a good candidate for the procedure.
How It Works
During a robotic-assisted laparoscopy, tiny incisions will be made around the area of your belly button. Miniature surgical tools and a lighted camera are used to perform the surgery. Your surgeon will use a robotic controller to move the tools, allowing them to achieve especially precise and controlled movements throughout the surgery. It is important to note that your surgeon remains in the operating room with you and retains complete control of the robotic system at all times during the surgery.
Benefits of Robotic-Assisted Surgery
Utilizing a computer-assisted mechanism that can bend and twist in tiny, precise movements is especially valuable when working in the pelvic region. That’s because it contains an intricate network of reproductive organs and tissue in very tight quarters.
Robotic-assisted laparoscopic surgery requires a much smaller incision size than traditional, open surgery – which can speed up relief and recovery, and improve patient outcomes.
Among the many benefits robotic-assisted surgery offers are:
- Unparalleled 360-degree dexterity
- Added precision
- Improved control
- Faster recovery time
- Less post-op pain
- Minimal scarring
- Fewer surgical risks
